Why Choose?

I have been reading romance novels since I was a teenager…

I didn’t even know this was a thing.

Somewhere along the way, quietly and without any fanfare… the “why choose” trope found its way onto the shelves, built an audience, and settled into its own space in the world of romance… and I completely missed it.

From what I’ve now come to understand, the idea itself isn’t entirely new. Its roots stretch back into earlier romance (especially in fantasy and paranormal spaces) where a woman might be surrounded by multiple love interests, where each interest offers something different. But in those stories, there was almost always a final decision. A choice had to be made. One stayed, the others faded away. That was the rule…

Then something shifted. I have come to learn, that in the early to mid 2010s, particularly within indie publishing spaces, writers began to experiment. They questioned that rule. What if she didn’t have to choose? What if love didn’t need to be reduced to a single outcome? And just like that, without asking permission, the trope evolved.

My research tells me that by the late 2010s into the early 2020s, it had fully arrived. Not just as an idea, but as a recognized and named trope. Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing and Wattpad gave writers the freedom to explore it, and readers responded. Strongly.

Fans of this trope say there is something quietly relieving about it. No tension of “who will she pick.” No sense of loss when a favorite character is left behind. No pressure for one person to be everything. Just… an expansion of what love can look like.

And yet, here I am, only just discovering it.

But when I think about it, it makes sense why I didn’t.

This trope tends to live in genres I don’t naturally gravitate toward… fantasy romance, dark romance, paranormal worlds, academy settings (except the Love Hypothesis 😁)… spaces where imagination stretches wider and the rules of reality are more flexible. That’s where “why choose” feels most at home.

For me, I tend to sit more with quieter, grounded stories. The slow ones. The reflective ones. The ones that feel like sitting by a window in the evening with your thoughts. So yes, of course it slipped past me.

Still, I find something about it… interesting. It challenges something we have long accepted without questioning that love must be singular to be valid. That choosing one means losing others. That fullness only comes in one form. “What if it didn’t?” it seems to ask.

So, while I see why people would like the trope, I on the other hand, believe in choosing. I believe in the weight of it. In the clarity of it. I believe, even in the ache that sometimes comes with it.

I love the deep feeling that comes with “I choose You”… Not everyone. Not everything. Just… you.
Even if it hurts.
Even if it costs something.
Even if it doesn’t come easy.
That, to me, is where love sharpens into meaning.

So while the shelves may be expanding, and the stories evolving, I find myself still drawn to that singular thread… The courage and the consequence… of choosing one.

I choose to choose 😁

BEING THE BIGGER PERSON

This is one topic I have always thought deeply about.

At one point or another in our lives, we all get hurt; we all get angry and want to say hurtful things back at the person who has hurt us, we all feel we are being mistreated or betrayed. Sometimes we may have heard that a dear friend is saying hurtful things about us or they may even hurt us in our faces. In our homes, children will get upset by their parents, parents will be annoyed by their children… a wife’s “big mouth” will say regrettable things to her husband and a husband will say the most offensive things in return and it goes on and on and on and on.

In these situations, it is my opinion that there always has to be the bigger person. Being the bigger person doesn’t mean the other person is bad and then you are good. Being the bigger person only means you possess certain qualities and capabilities that he/she doesn’t possess. Being the bigger person strengthens you and your qualities and then maybe, just maybe, it MIGHT help the other person realise they didn’t have to be mean or offensive and then subsequently, the may handle situations better.

In a situation where it is clear that a person wants to pick a fight with you deliberately (and in this case, I will without apologies refer to the other person as the bad person), it is very important to know that you should never talk back to that person. When you talk back to a person, you have stooped to his/her level and you will definitely regret getting into it with them.

Being the bigger person is really hard, especially if you got some pride going there, and who doesn’t? One thing that stops us from taking the position of the bigger person is because in many conflicts, everyone seems to be the wronged and not the wrong one. No one wants to be honest. Sometimes I tell myself; “it doesn’t matter if you are the wronged, just be the bigger person”. The battle goes on within me and I hope you know, most of the time I don’t listen to me. It’s a WIP and I know I will get there one day.

The major way to be a bigger person is by admitting you are wrong and then apologizing – this of course is when you are wrong; but in a situation where you are not wrong and find yourself in a heady situation, the one and major quality you need to have is self control. This isn’t easy and if I may add, exercising self control with a difficult/challenging person is exceptionally difficult.

Another thing that can help is being positive. Seeing the positive side of every situation could play a very important part. When I apply positivity in being the bigger person, it’s usually with the 90/10 principle in mind. Since the day I found out about the principle I like to keep it handy. It helps with my self control.

What is the 90/10 principle? That’s another topic altogether. I think I should write about it some other time.

…this thought (being the bigger person) has been on my mind for a long while so I don’t think I should talk about it all in one day… to be continued.

Go

“Today is the first day of the rest of your life”. Charles Diedrich believed that by saying this everyday, we get the chance to start a new life every day and not limit ourselves to our past.

Every now and again we all get the need to start or restart life. Maybe it’s after a season of lukewarm living, a desire to cut off of certain things, a season of too many bad choices, or just the need to begin again.

What ever the reason may be, on any day I choose to start or restart something in my life, I begin by being intentional about my feet; I put on comfortable shoes that could take me anywhere and everywhere the entire day.

I don’t know how, but it works for me.

For me, my feet are the tool  for possession and repossession. Deuteronomy 11:24 and Joshua 1:3.

So today, on my journey to turn a new leaf in my attitude to a very long list of things, I have kitted up and I’m ready to go.

Mimi, Let’s do this. You’ve got this.

Truth

You speak the truth and you assume that people believe you.

They don’t.

The world is in love with lies.

They are drawn to lies.

They are repelled by truth.

They prefer to hear the lies. It sounds very close to what they believe.

Nevertheless, I choose truth.

Maybe that’s why my mum named me so… Mimi (Truth).

Choices

A long time ago, about 20 years or so, I had a window size poster of Michael Ballack on one side and Andriy Shevchenko on the other, I often found myself feeling bad for always having Ballack on display. I would sometimes turn it over to give Shevchenko a few days, but that was it…just a few days. I hated that I had to choose between the two even when it was clear I obviously preferred one of them.

Often in life, we get stuck between two things or even more and can’t decide which one to pick. We live in a world of choices and we often feel like it has to be one thing for another. I hate having to choose. I could peruse a menu and end up frustrated from the pressure of having to make a choice.

I listened to a sermon some time ago where the preacher had said he found his son in his bathroom trying to use his hair products, and when he asked the boy what he had been doing in his bathroom, he said he was looking for his dad to tell him he loved him. The dad then asked, “Did you want to tell me you love me or you did you want to use my hair product?”… His son’s reply was; “why can’t it both?”

Yes, why can’t it be both?

Life is filled with so many choices. Some are hard and some easy. For the hard ones, I often find myself wishing it was as easy as my poster, that way I could try both sides and get to pick the better outcome.
