Morgan…Home

I have a habit of checking my Spotify stats at the end of the month… I also look forward to Spotify wrapped at the end of every year.
For a number of years, the story was simple: Morgan Wallen. Every Wrapped. Every playlist. Every random shuffle. The man had permanent residency in my ears.

Last year, Brandon Lake somehow marched in and took the top spot, and I didn’t even argue. I kind of liked It. It fit the season I was in… perfectly.

But lately… another name has been quietly climbing the ranks.

Riley Green.

This  led me to a full-blown identity crisis. I even found myself asking this question out loud a number of times:

“Wait… is Riley Green replacing my Morgan Wallen?”

Naturally, in the usual Mimi style, I launched an investigation worthy of a true Spotify detective, hahahha. I went back and listened to Morgan. Then Riley. Then Morgan again. Strictly for research purposes, of course.

My findings?

Riley Green is fantastic. His songs are amazing. They stay on repeat. He has that laid-back country charm that I really like, he’s got a voice that sounds like smooth wine, and honestly… the good Lord took His time with that face.

I think something else that drew me to Riley Green is his acting debut. I’m ridiculously curious to see him in Marshals and what he brings as an actor.

But Morgan Wallen?

Morgan Wallen is home. That’s my conclusion.

There’s a difference between an artist who gives you bangers and an artist whose entire catalogue feels like they’ve somehow been reading your diary without your permission. Morgan has a song for every version of me… the happy one, the stubborn one, the heartbroken one, the hopeful one, and the one who just wants to drive with the windows down pretending she’s in a country music video.

Riley Green has songs I absolutely love.

Morgan Wallen has somehow become part of the furniture.

I have to add… This isn’t a battle. Nobody’s getting voted out of my house. My playlists have room for both of them. Always.

I’ve just realized that Riley Green is my current obsession…

…but Morgan Wallen is my forever.

Some people come into your life for a season.

Morgan apparently signed a lifetime lease.

Country Music Challenge

As I tried to get into my new phase…being at home by myself and with a little more time on my hands, I made a list of some activities to keep me busy. I went ahead to Pinterest to look for challenges that would keep happy too.

I found one that I really liked…and for the past fifteen days, I have had my alarm set at 11:25am to find and update the challenge for the day. I updated my WhatsApp story daily and it sparked a daily conversation with my cousin, Ngodoo. I loved talking and sharing country music with her these past two weeks.

I would like to share my choices and I hope it sparks an interest in one or two…or more people.

On the 1st day, for a song that reminds me of summer, it was Keith Urban’s Long Hot Summer, there is no way I could have gone with any other song, I remember having that song on repeat a few years ago.

Day 2: A song by your favourite female Artist…I went with Miranda Lambert, The House That Built Me. That song makes me think of the house I grew up in, so many memories and stories.

For day 3, I went with a song that has my hometown written all over it, Dylan Scott captured some of the feelings that I have about Makurdi town in his song; This Town’s Been Too Good To Us

When I got to day 4 I thought I wouldn’t have a song because I couldn’t remembered if I had been to a concert before, then I remembered I was in one myself …over 20 years ago. It was a Christian concert…so I picked My Help by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir . Not a country song, but I went with it.

Day 5:  a song from the 90’s…George Straight – I Cross My Heart

Day 6: a song from my favorite band… Restless Road – On My Way

Day 7: I have no idea why I can’t remember what song I picked on that day, but for today, I will go with Need You Now by Lady Antebellum as a song about a breakup.

Day 8: A song that you can dance to… Walker Hayes’s Fancy Like.

Day 9: A song that is a cover… I had two amazing covers to share…  Fast Car by Luke Combs and Someone you loved by Mitchell Tempenny

Day 10: A song from your latest concert… Overdose by OD Woods and Atela.

Day 11: A song about love… Hard To Love by Lee Brice

Day 12: A song that is a karaoke staple – Dirt Road Anthem by Jason Aldean

Day 13: A song from a Texas music artist…George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me

Day 14: A song that is your favorite of all time…none other but Dierks Bentley’s Black

On the last day, day 15, A song I have on repeat, went with I Thought You Should Know by Morgan Wallen…This song makes me feel so many future feelings. Makes me think about my boy.

Hope you found something to take with you from my list.

You can listen to the playlist on Spotify

Crazy behind the wheel

“I’ve got to tell you this…anytime you take your hands off the wheel and start enjoying the music, I get a bit scared”

This came just when I went crazy at the chorus of Tiera Kennedy’s ‘Gentleman‘ this morning.

I spent the next minute explaining how I still have the vehicle under my control even when I go crazy.

I dropped the kid off at school and lined up some good music for my short drive to work…

…may or may not go crazy.

It’s a beautiful morning…

Country

That’s very much all it is.

What is your favorite genre of music?

It makes my heart smile.

Even when I am down… It finds a way to pick me up.

With most of them… The drawl and rich baritone does me in.

The touch of every guitar string.

The relatable lyrics in almost every song.

The simple things that you begin to value as you listen.

It’s all so whole and real.

I love Country music

Morgan Wallen

Shortly after I marveled at John Legend’s 24 track album, I found a 36 track album that left me thinking.

This one was by an amazing country singer and song writer. He was a contestant on the sixth season of the voice on Adam Levine’s team.

His third album titled One Thing At A Time is what I’m talking about… It is something

I think I’ll dwell on my top 5.

You Proof…amazing song… Honest with no bull crap.

Last Night… Really love this one. I’m not even sure why.

Devil Don’t Know… I try to imagine this one. Truely. Kind of funny, is it possible that the devil don’t know some kind of hell?… Yeah… Some things hurt so much, you got to wonder.

Tennessee Numbers… This makes me sad for whoever relates to it.

Thought You Should Know… This one just gets me thinking of my Su’eddie…everytime.

I’ll recommend the album to anyone. It is beautiful.

He’s a good singer… Morgan Wallen

A Beautiful Life

Whenever I get a chance to find new and good music, I take it and I enjoy it.

The Danish Netflix movie A Beautiful Life was one of these chances.

We see a fisherman who loves to sing and play music with no intention of becoming a music star. Somehow, his talents are discovered by a music producer and there the story grows.

Elliott, the fisherman/musician takes us through the movie with beautiful songs that he gets to write and sing.

The movie may not be everyone’s cup of tea as it falls under the cheesy romance drama category but it is a good story.

To be very honest, it was Elliott’s looks that drew me to the movie. He is a hunk.

Elliott is played by Danish singer Christopher Lund Nissen. He’s commonly known as Christopher. I’m glad to have found him and I’ve latched unto some of his previous songs.

My favourite song from the movie is the one with the same title as the movie… It’s a beautiful song… A beautiful Life – Christopher

Tennessee orange

I listened with a little bit of melancholy but I smiled the whole time.

I was melancholic because I couldn’t get over thinking about the way a person can give up all and everything they once believed in for another because of the way they make them feel. I smiled because I actually thought it was sweet.

Tennessee Orange is a song by Megan Moroney.

It’s a song about college football. In the song, she tells her folks how she had ditched her Georgia ways for some guy’s Tennessee thing.

She sings a lot of confessions about the many ways she has disappointed them and finishes with; “I’m wearing Tennessee Orange for him” after each verse.

It is unusual for a person to totally switch sides from one club/group to the other… Like an Arsenal fan suddenly becoming a Manchester United fan, or Lakers fan suddenly loving Celtics…

… But I guess love can make a person do this.

Love can make a person do a lot of things they never imagined they would.

It’s the reason Bulldog red doesn’t seem too appealing anymore and now she’s wearing Tennessee Orange for him.
