Chocolate Caramel Coffee ☕

I love a good hot cup of beverage.

One of my favourite mixes is Lipton and milk with little or no sugar. I tried after a few nudges to use some honey but it just didn’t feel the same.

For me, honey goes with lemon tea, camomile tea and the likes.

I also love coffee… a lot. Sometimes I blend it with some cocoa powder when I want something thick but strong.

Today, I suddenly had the need to add some sweet to my thick but strong. I didn’t want to add sugar and so I thought I should add some honey.

I thought about it for some time and decided I wouldn’t like a Chocolate-Coffee-Honey mix.

I went with the next best thing… Caramel.

I had a little left from a batch I had made. And it worked just right.

I love my new beverage mix. To you it’s kind of a Mocha remix, for me it’s…

Chocolate-Caramel-Coffee.

Grocery Store or Supermarket?

A lot of people often do not know that there is a difference in the names of the places they do their shopping at. You could run into a person who can easily say they are off to the grocery store but then you find that they actually went to the supermarket to stock up on their toiletries. There is a clear distinction between these two places.

The difference between grocery stores and a supermarkets lies solely with the items stocked and sold. While the grocery store has only foods and all edibles, the supermarket stocks everything possible from food to household item and clothes and lots more.  This means that if you are looking to stock up on food only, your stop should be a grocery store but if you plan to stock on food and other things, then you definitely should be heading for a supermarket.

To identify the difference between a grocery store and a super market, we need to really get a good picture of what one is.

Grocery store:

This kind of store usually stocks and sells all kinds of food items. These foods range from fresh out of the farm foods to packaged and ready to make or eat foods.

Every grocery store has the following sections and more

  • Meat – this includes all variety of protein. Beef, chicken, fish, pock etc.
  • Produce – these include Fruits and vegetables, they are usually fresh off the farm
  • Diary – this isle or section displays cream, butter, milk, cheese, custard and the rest of its kind.
  • Bakery – grocery stores always stock up on breads, croissants, cakes, pies and more or they have a bakery within and they bake them themselves.
  • Canned food – foods in this section are canned meat/fish, diced tomatoes, olives and lots more.
  • Frozen food – these are food that you get to defrost at home. E.g. frozen fruits and vegetables, shrimp, ice cream etc.
  • Beverages – grocery stores always stock up on non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic drinks too if licensed to sell alcohol.
  • Bottled and packed items like Breakfast cereals, cake mix, pet food, salad dressings, oils, ketchup, mustard etc.

Supermarket:

This is a very large store that stocks up and retails general goods. One distinctive characteristic about a supermarket is that you get to serve yourself by moving through shelves and isles to pick your items on your own. The range of items at a supermarket is very large. There is almost everything available. One stop at a supermarket can get you sorted out in your personal needs, food needs, home maintenance needs and much more.

The super market is usually arranged in sections to enable the shoppers to find their items very easily and also for proper organization. These sections include:

  • Groceries – in this section, all items available at grocery stores can be found here. The grocery area usually takes a huge portion of the supermarket because it is a section of the market with sections of its own.
  • Household – these shelves display detergents, cleaning supplies, diapers and more. Some large appliances even have kitchen ware and household appliances like bread toasters, blenders or even washing machines available for purchase.
  • Personal health and care – here you would find items like cosmetics, perfumes, hair products and general toiletries.
  • Textile – a wide variety of clothes and garments are found shelves and hangers in this section. These include children’s clothing and shoes too.
  • Magazines/books – a wide array of books and magazine usually fill this section. A wide range of genre is usually covered so that gets to find something that interests them.
  • Toys – children’s toys and event adult toys.
  • Pharmacies – some supermarkets often include a pharmaceutical section for people will such needs.

Distinctive Differences Between Grocery Store And Supermarket

  1. Items stocked and sold – while the grocery store specializes in one category, which is food and drinks, the supermarket has no restriction to the items it sells, it has a very wide range of items and products.
  2. Size – a supermarket is usually much larger than a grocery store.
  3. Location – grocery stores are often located in neighborhoods and meet the immediate community’s needs.
  4. Ownership – grocery stores are often owned by families or small businesses while supermarkets are almost always owned by large companies and/or organizations.

One reason why it is more difficult to tell the difference between the two is that as time changes and things change with it, people are beginning to alter the way things used to be. Like a grocery store for example. Some grocery stores tend to stock up on items that are not food related, maybe because it can turn in a good profit. These items are displayed on isles where you will not miss them, like cards, books, magazines, key holders, handkerchiefs and many other quick buy items. So now, people do not know that it is meant to be specialized to a category of products only.

From the Heart

Thank you Stephanie…

A few days ago, a cousin of mine dropped by the bakery to find out about my Christmas gift offers for this year. He particularly wanted to know what he could get for different amounts. He had a list of 3 groups, each group having a certain amount budgeted per head. This got me thinking. We all really love different people in different measures, sometimes without even knowing it. Most of the time, it is this measure of love that dictates the amount of money, time and energy we put into gifting to our loved ones.

I got a gift a couple of weeks ago, I was so deeply moved by this gift. It was a mug. Yes, a mug. One would wonder why a mug could mean so much to anyone. Well, first things first, any tea lover would always appreciate a mug…but that isn’t the reason why this mug melted my heart. It wasn’t even my birthday or any special event. I just got a message from Stephanie asking me if I could send someone over to pick up something for me. My first response was shame.

Stephanie is a customer, turned friend, turned sister. We have a special bond I can’t define. I can’t even put a finger on when she became special, but she simply is… special. She recently fell seriously ill. I never went over to see her, we just kept in touch on phone. That’s why my first response was shame. I asked myself why she still cared even after I had not been there for her like I should have. Anyway that’s a story for another day.

Stehnanie is a CAKE LOVER. We would sometimes quarrel about how much cake she was eating and whenever I decided to cut her off cake for a while, she would make up stories and try to convince me to sell cake to her. It was a back and forth thing, almost every week. That is why when the mug Stephanie sent to me arrived, I was deeply moved.

It read “I ❤️ You more than CAKE”

My son’s jaw dropped when I told him who sent it. “Mummy, that means she loves you very well o” was what he said… He knows just how much she loves cake too.

Today, I made some tea in my mug and decided to share this story of love and gifting. Show love to someone this Season, let it be from the heart. I will do same.

And or with?

I love tea. Especially black tea. I love to take it with some lemon and honey. Over the past couple of months I’ve begun to drag my husband Terver into my morning tea routine. He’s not a tea person. Last week I placed his breakfast on the table and he noticed the tea was different. He asked why it was whitish, I told him it was Lipton with milk and a little suger… I love that combination. “Sugar?” he asked. “Why didn’t you use honey?” I explained how I thought honey didnt go well with milk in black tea.

I actually have never tried black tea with mlik and honey. So I honestly don’t know if it doesn’t go well together. For me, it’s just one of those things that you feel do not go together. Just the other day Terver came over to my bake shop and he had with him some corn, coconut and mzembe (local pear). He offered and I declined. I told him I didnt think it would go well together. He persisted and I tried. The corn and pear is a very common combination but I had never tried it. I was right. I didn’t like it. The coconut and pear however was awesome. Different strokes for different folks I guess. I have heard people say a little honey in warm milk has calming effects, helps with insomnia and so on. I just don’t know if I can combine them. I have never been so much of a milk person and I also learned to like honey so I think i see where the problem could be coming from.

Anyway, his response to my opinion on Lipton with milk and honey was quite funny. He said “Babe, even the Bible talks about milk and honey together and you think milk won’t go well with honey?”. Guess what my argument was, “The Bible said ‘milk and honey’ , it didn’t say ‘milk with honey'”. It’s been days now, but I really can’t get it off my mind, were the people drinking milk and honey or were they taking milk with honey?… I guess I will never know.

What cheers you up?

I may be having the worst day but when I eat a well cooked plate of beans, I feel better. For some people it’s ice cream, for others it’s alcohol, for some, chocolate etc. Everyone has that thing that does it for them.

In October 2017 I found myself in a very frustrating situation. I had just started a low carb diet and I realised beans had lots of carbohydrates. Growing up we were told to eat beans for protein. Yes. Beans has more protein than rice does and then it goes ahead to load up on carbohydrates too. No, I kid you not. For every 100g of beans you consume, you would be consuming 63g of carbohydrates and 21g protein.

I really love beans. I remember a long time ago, maybe 20 years ago or so. My cousin came back home from school. He had travelled over 500 kilometres. He arrived very late at night. There were no mobile phones then so he couldn’t tell us he would be arriving and so we didn’t make any meal ready for him. He was someone I could do anything for, I loved him very much and we were very close… I still do even though we aren’t so close anymore. When I realised by morning time that he had helped himself to my pot of beans, I cried, literally. I always had beans cooked and stored. He didn’t understand why I was reacting that way. He didn’t even believe i was upset. He only laughed. Yes, Imoter will laugh at you in your most serious moments and he’d get away with it, he’s adorable.

Back to the present, I’m 38 years old, I’m watching my weight and I need to be careful how many carbs I take in because my body has a love hate relationship with carbohydrates. Suddenly I find my self on a mission to find something besides beans that gives me joy. Something that isn’t bad for my body so that I can alternate with my beloved beans. I wonder what that is. Although I must confess, beans is the only high carb meal I cheat with and I don’t feel guilty.

I wish myself luck on my mission to find a replacement joy giver. For now, it’s still beans.
