Becoming?

I sometimes wonder about people who arrive at a certain age and still don’t seem to know what they want from life.

Let’s get something straight, I am not saying  I think everyone should have everything figured out by a particular age. I don’t believe that. Life doesn’t work that way. Some people find themselves early. Some people find themselves much later. Some people have to lose themselves a few times before they understand who they are becoming.

But I do wonder about something else… What happens when you don’t know what you want, and you also don’t seem to be looking?

When there is no work you are pursuing, no skill you are developing, no dream you are trying to build, no particular interest you’re exploring, no question you’re asking yourself about the kind of life you want to live.

At some point, I believe we have to move beyond simply existing.

You don’t have to have a five-year plan and you dont have to know exactly where you’ll be at 40 or 50. You don’t even have to know what your life’s purpose is… although that wouldn’t be bad.

But surely there should be something you are curious about… something you are becoming…. Something you are learning… Something you are trying.

It’s important to know this; there is a big difference between being lost and being comfortable with being lost.

And then, there is a difference between taking a pause and making a lifestyle out of waiting.

As a person who has taken up a role to help guide young adults, there’s a question I like to ask them and I guide them through activities to enable them figure it out;

“What are you becoming?”

I think that’s a question worth asking ourselves at every age.
