Best Gift

I Hid My Birthday on Facebook and It Was the Best Gift I Gave Myself

You know that thing Facebook does on your birthday right?…blasts your name like breaking news so everyone and their cat can write “HBD” on your wall? For years, I played along. Smiling through 300 messages…typing “Thank you 😊” until my thumbs cried for mercy. Can we be honest?…half of the people remembered because Zuckerberg whispered in their ear.

So, this year, I decided to try something different.Something a little bold. I hid my birthday on Facebook. No notifications, no confetti GIFs, no obligation to reply before people think I’m rude.

I actually turned it off last year, but somehow, I think the memory feed on people’s walls gave me away so it didn’t work so well.

This year, it worked…And you know what? It was glorious.

When I woke up, my phone was blissfully quiet. No early pings, no endless “Happy Birthday!” alerts. And here’s the part I didn’t expect…I didn’t feel guilty about not responding because… there was nothing to respond to! No pressure to craft the perfect thank-you post. No marathon of copy-paste replies.

And for the first time in years, my phone battery didn’t run down before noon…Turns out, gratitude can be exhausting. Really!!!

Instead of performing my birthday on social media, I lived it. I got up, did some cleaning. Then I studied…I had an exam at 3 PM. Adulthood doesn’t pause for cake, right? Hahaha.

I wrote the exam, and it went well. That alone felt like a gift. Later, I spent time with my son and my bakeshop family. We kept it simple: cake, drinks, laughs, and a few games. The kind of fun that doesn’t need a hashtag or a curated story to make it real.

When the fun was over and they had left, I curled up and wrote a review comparing the book and movie adaptation of The Hating Game (spoiler: the book wins). And before sleep, I shared a deep, meaningful conversation with my husband. No noise, no pressure…just peace.

Some people still reached out. Not because Facebook reminded them, but because they remembered on their own. And those few genuine messages? They meant more than hundreds of automated “HBDs.”

I realized something powerful: sometimes we mistake visibility for value. Just because your wall is full of comments doesn’t mean your day is full of meaning. This year, I got the opposite…less noise, more depth.

Would I Do It Again? Absolutely.
I’ll probably keep my birthday hidden forever now. Because peace feels better than popularity. Because living your day beats performing it. And because the best gift you can give yourself sometimes… is quiet.

So, if you’ve ever felt pressured by social media birthdays, here’s my little secret: hide the date. Your real friends will still find you. And you’ll finally have time to finish that book review or, you know, take an exam without worrying if your battery will survive the avalanche of notifications.

Sometimes the best celebration is the one where you’re fully present…with yourself and the people who truly matter.

Have you ever tried hiding your birthday on social media? Or do you think you’d feel left out?

The morning coffee that kept me company while I wrote this

Remembering 40

I found myself turning at about 2:00am last night. The power was out and the heat was unbearable. After tossing for another 30 miuntes, I gave up. I picked up my tablet and began to write a welcome address for a few young Adults I was to meet with in the morning. When I was done at 3:15am, I decided to go through my notes on the tablet and then I began to clean up by deleting old and unnecessary stuff.

As I cleaned up, I came across my 40th birthday plan.

When I turned 40, I had a breakfast meeting with 40 ladies. The idea was to rub minds and share with each other. All went south for me when we were on the second agenda for the day.

The feelings game was an avenue for everyone to share something with the group. Before the game started, a variety of sweets were passed around and each sweet had a question. The rule was to share based on the sweet (question) you picked. Somewhere, somehow, along the way, the game got lost. People began to get up and focus on me. “Mimi did this for me one time”, “Mimi is this to me”, “Mimi is that”… It seemed like it would never end, and because I don’t handle praise too well, I began to cry and the tears refused to stop. The entire morning just seemed to follow in that line. I began to ask myself if I had sent out a silent vibe. I began to question the whole thing. Did they think I asked them to come so that they could say good things about me?

I cried so much, people began to question the tears. I began to feel out of place. I’m ashamed to say today, that I escaped and disappeared immediately after the photographs.

A friend asked a year later why I had cried like that, I explained that the  praises and attention were too much for me and that hadn’t been the plan for the day. She didn’t quite understand and so I didn’t bother to try to explain.

Today, 2 years and  8 months later, I finally feel better and able to tell the story.

My 40th birthday Breakfast meeting didn’t go as planned but I sure learned plenty from that day. At least I know what not to do if there’s a next time and I’m sorry to say this; I know who not to invite.

So far… it looks Good

Yesterday I turned 42.

I had a good day. I spent it with my husband, son, siblings and their children. We used the opportunity of being together like this and called in a photographer to take some professional family portraits. I can’t wait till they are ready.

My friend Helen showed up and that topped up the day some more. I love seeing Helen.

Today was an amazing day. I’ve been in search for something new and I think I found it…today.

My sisters and I visited a friend of theirs, this friend has a small garden, she nurses plants and sells them off…but she keeps most of them. It started small, like a joke, and now she has over a hundred kind. The moment I walked into her space, I knew I wanted to have and care for one of them. I’ve never had a plant before.

Lately I’ve found myself so amazed by Derrick Knight’s garden. I think the universe is telling me that it’s time to get a plant.

For my birthday, my sister’s friend, Domitila, gave me three plants from her garden. I insisted on paying for the fourth.

I took a few photos of her garden to share.

I loved being there.

This is the trunk of the car just before we left.

42 isn’t going so bad, so far, it looks good.

Celebrating

Some years ago, I got my first male student at my bakery; Kator… He was very young and innocent.

He found himself in the midst of at least 10 ladies…

The mother in me became very protective and before long, everyone called him my son…even his own mother.

My son also called him ‘brother’; A couple of years ago he baked a surprise birthday cake by himself for Kator from start to finish.

One afternoon, I asked Sonter to go and get Kator for me and I over heard him say;

“My mom says you should come inside”

“Ah, Sonter, you always say our mom. Why the switch to ‘my mom’ today?” Kator asked.

Weeks after that conversation I found out Kator had upset him…

…and the pattern continued.

‘Our’ became ‘my’ whenever he wasn’t happy with him.

I didn’t stop him, I only told him he couldn’t go on in life that way…cutting people off just because you were upset with them. This year, SonTer sketched an image of Kator for his birthday.

I digress…

We’ve not seen much of him lately because he got into school for his MBBS.

This year, Kator sent me the most touching birthday message anyone has ever sent to me…ever.

His words to himself today also encouraged me; https://lyricsscribbles.wordpress.com/2023/09/12/chapter-twenty-two22/

I feel so blessed to call him son.

Happy birthday to him.

A Birthday Wish

I took a little time this morning to scroll through all my posts to find any post I had made about Aunty Ben that I could make reference to. I did not find any. I was very shocked. I couldn’t believe that I had never written anything about her. She is an amazing human.

Today, I drove to her place to give her a birthday. A cake from my cousin Ngodoo to her. As usual, she was warm and welcoming. She always is.

Today, she turned 65…but like Ngodoo said, it’s 56 in reverse…and she looks it…56 I mean.

One day I will write all I’ve got to say about this wonderful woman.

Today I’ll just say HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎉🎊 Aunty Ben.

I wish you all of life’s blessings and more.
