Soundtrack

Every year, around my birthday, I tend to notice a recurring song on my speakers. Every year, a new song(s).

I actually don’t set out to choose it or them, they just quietly become the song. It’s one repeat in the kitchen, in the car, when I pray, at work in the office and sometimes in the quiet of my mind when I wake or I am about to fall asleep.

Looking back, I think I can almost trace my life by these songs.

When I turned 40, my song was The Story I’ll Tell by Naomi Raine. It was a season where I found myself trusting God with chapters I couldn’t yet understand. I didn’t have all the answers, but I believed one day I’d look back and see His fingerprints all over my life. I didn’t have these words back then. They just flow now as I look back and realise that’s what that song was helping me do.

At 41, it was Dependable God by Victor Thompson. That year reminded me that God’s faithfulness isn’t measured by how easy life feels. He’s dependable because that’s His nature. He doesn’t change.

At 42, Joy Is Coming by Todd Galberth became my anthem. I mean… Anthem. It didn’t cancel the difficult days but it simply reminded me that they don’t have the final word. Joy was on its way, even when I couldn’t yet see it.

Then came 43, and if I had to describe that year in one name, it would be Brandon Lake. His songs filled my days with worship. They drew my attention away from what was happening around me and back to the One who never changes. When my Spotify wrapped at the end of the year, I wasn’t surprised to find him up there as my artist of the year. He beat Morgan Wallen by a long long slide. My favourite song was Heartfelt Hallelujah. I even got the merch.

Now, as I prepare to turn 44, two songs won’t leave me alone: What a God by Seu Worship and Made for More by Bethel Music.

One fills me with awe while other fills me with expectation.

One reminds me of who God is and the other reminds me of who He created me to become.

Maybe that’s what this new year is about. Not striving for more, but responding to the God who has always been more than enough.

When I look back, I don’t remember these years by birthdays or calendars. I remember them by songs.

Enjoy the Art

(L-R) Wallen, Hoover, Reynolds

I was minding my business on TikTok this evening when Apple TV+ decided to tell me Ryan Reynolds has a new movie coming out… This September. I already know I’ll most likely watch it when it becomes available in my area.

What surprised me wasn’t the trailer. It was the comment section of the post.

Oh my Goodness… The hate was loud. Really really loud.
I found some commentors asking, “Wait… what happened?” “Why does everyone suddenly hate Ryan Reynolds?” “Do we not like Ryan Reynolds anymore?”
I didn’t wonder along with them because I knew exactly why they were hating.

A lot of the backlash stems from the ongoing legal dispute involving Reynold’s wife, Blake Lively, and actor/director Justin Baldoni. Ryan stood by his wife publicly… as most husbands probably would. This made many people feel disappointed by the position he took. Whether you agree with him or not, opinions have become incredibly divided.

I won’t lie. For a brief moment, I felt caught in the middle too.
I’ve always liked Ryan Reynolds. His sense of humor is effortless, his acting is brilliant, and he has this way of making almost every role enjoyable to watch.
So, did the controversy make me pause? Yes it sure did.
Did it make me hate him? No.

And that’s when another thought crossed my mind.
Why do we find it so easy to hate people these days?
Not disagree with them. Not question them. Not even criticize them. Just… hate them.

It reminded me of Colleen Hoover… And just to add, this whole Reynolds controversy stems from the period of the movie production of Hoovers It Ends with Us.

I’ve watched people tear Hoover apart online for years. The funny thing is, I’ve never even taken the time to investigate every reason behind the criticism. I simply know she’s become one of those people the internet has collectively decided to dislike.

Yet, somehow, millions of people have laughed, cried and healed through her books.

Then there’s Morgan Wallen.
Recently, I found myself reading about some of his past controversies. There were arrests, poor decisions and headlines that weren’t exactly flattering. Did it change the fact that I love his music?
No it didn’t.
His songs still make me smile.
They still tell stories that resonate with me.

So I made peace with something. I don’t have to approve of every decision an artist has ever made before I can appreciate what they create.

I can enjoy Morgan Wallen’s music without defending his mistakes.

I can admire Ryan Reynolds’ talent without pretending to know everything about his personal life.

I can appreciate Colleen Hoover’s creativity without making her my moral compass.

Maybe that’s where I’ve landed.

The internet doesn’t seem to leave much room for middle ground anymore. It’s almost as if we’re expected to pick a side immediately.

Love them.
Cancel them.
Support them.
Boycott them.
No middle ground.

But life has taught me that human beings are far more complicated than hashtags and comment sections.

People are flawed, they disappoint us, they grow, they make mistakes… Sometimes they apologize… Sometimes they don’t.

Sometimes we choose to keep supporting their work and sometimes we don’t.

That’s a personal decision, and I respect it.

For me, though, I don’t want to join every online pile-on just because it’s trending.

I’d rather think, read, make my own conclusions and remember that someone can create something beautiful while still being an imperfect human being.

If we demanded perfection from every artist before enjoying their work, our playlists would become very quiet, our bookshelves much emptier, and our watchlists surprisingly very very short.

So yes… I’ll probably watch the Ryan Reynolds movie.
I’ll still listen to Morgan Wallen.
I’ll probably pick up another Colleen Hoover book if the story interests me.

I won’t do all that because I think any of them are perfect, I will do it because I’m learning to appreciate the art without expecting perfection from the artist.
And honestly… I think there’s a little more peace in living that way… Peace for me.

So Be It

12. LION (2022)
13. Can You Imagine? (2023)
14. When Wind Meets Fire (2024)
15. So Be It (2026)

I found fifteen, and I don’t know if that is all there is, but since the Graves and Gardens album  in 2020, I have been drawn to their music. It lifts my mood and spirit.

I shared here in Can You Imagine about how good the 2023 album was. Before that I had written and shared my obsession with the album LION. Today I am in awe of the current one… So Be It.

I’ve caught myself crying a number of times while listening to some of the songs on this one.

From the humbling feeling that comes with the song ‘Thank You’ to the way I just surrender to ‘God I’m just grateful’ and also the vibe in ‘Alleluia’… The entire album is just beautiful.

As usual, Elevation Worship brings in worship leaders to praise and worship along with them on every album. The worship leaders on this album are Tiffany Hudson,  Chandler Moore, Brandon Lake, Davide Mutendji, Tori Elliott, Isaiah Templeton, Leeland Mooring,  Jonsal Barrientes and Chris Brown (When I say Chris Brown).

The album is available on music streaming platforms.

Current Obsession

It’s always one thing or the other with me.

Yes

At any point in my life, I’m mildly obsessed about something.

It may be for a short period like a day or a week…sometimes it can go on for months.

There’s always something I feel very strongly about.

It could be a book, a song, a person, a sermon… anything

This week? It’s between Luke Grimes and Yellowstone.

Luke Grimes plays the role of Kayce, the last son of John Dutton in the television series ‘Yellowstone’.

I don’t know how he didn’t make an impression when I saw him in American Sniper. Maybe that wasn’t his season in my heart.

With his ruffled up cowboy look, similar to Cory Asbury and Brandon Lake…who have had their fair share of my time, Grimes has managed to capture me with his acting and his music.

I’m currently enjoying his music on Spotify and I have added a few of them to my favorites.

I hope he stays with me for a while, I like the feeling.

Country Music Challenge

As I tried to get into my new phase…being at home by myself and with a little more time on my hands, I made a list of some activities to keep me busy. I went ahead to Pinterest to look for challenges that would keep happy too.

I found one that I really liked…and for the past fifteen days, I have had my alarm set at 11:25am to find and update the challenge for the day. I updated my WhatsApp story daily and it sparked a daily conversation with my cousin, Ngodoo. I loved talking and sharing country music with her these past two weeks.

I would like to share my choices and I hope it sparks an interest in one or two…or more people.

On the 1st day, for a song that reminds me of summer, it was Keith Urban’s Long Hot Summer, there is no way I could have gone with any other song, I remember having that song on repeat a few years ago.

Day 2: A song by your favourite female Artist…I went with Miranda Lambert, The House That Built Me. That song makes me think of the house I grew up in, so many memories and stories.

For day 3, I went with a song that has my hometown written all over it, Dylan Scott captured some of the feelings that I have about Makurdi town in his song; This Town’s Been Too Good To Us

When I got to day 4 I thought I wouldn’t have a song because I couldn’t remembered if I had been to a concert before, then I remembered I was in one myself …over 20 years ago. It was a Christian concert…so I picked My Help by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir . Not a country song, but I went with it.

Day 5:  a song from the 90’s…George Straight – I Cross My Heart

Day 6: a song from my favorite band… Restless Road – On My Way

Day 7: I have no idea why I can’t remember what song I picked on that day, but for today, I will go with Need You Now by Lady Antebellum as a song about a breakup.

Day 8: A song that you can dance to… Walker Hayes’s Fancy Like.

Day 9: A song that is a cover… I had two amazing covers to share…  Fast Car by Luke Combs and Someone you loved by Mitchell Tempenny

Day 10: A song from your latest concert… Overdose by OD Woods and Atela.

Day 11: A song about love… Hard To Love by Lee Brice

Day 12: A song that is a karaoke staple – Dirt Road Anthem by Jason Aldean

Day 13: A song from a Texas music artist…George Strait – Carrying Your Love With Me

Day 14: A song that is your favorite of all time…none other but Dierks Bentley’s Black

On the last day, day 15, A song I have on repeat, went with I Thought You Should Know by Morgan Wallen…This song makes me feel so many future feelings. Makes me think about my boy.

Hope you found something to take with you from my list.

You can listen to the playlist on Spotify

Crazy behind the wheel

“I’ve got to tell you this…anytime you take your hands off the wheel and start enjoying the music, I get a bit scared”

This came just when I went crazy at the chorus of Tiera Kennedy’s ‘Gentleman‘ this morning.

I spent the next minute explaining how I still have the vehicle under my control even when I go crazy.

I dropped the kid off at school and lined up some good music for my short drive to work…

…may or may not go crazy.

It’s a beautiful morning…

Just Feel it.

I listened to a song and I got sad. Very sad.

My friend Jessica couldn’t understand why it got to me that way.

“It’s just a song” She said.

No, it’s not just a song. It’s someone’s thoughts in words about how they feel but with instruments, making music. Music for you… The listener.

That’s the purpose… for you to feel what the composer/singer wants you to feel…and if you can, relate to it.

I feel it’s a waste of the creator’s efforts if we can listen to a song, read a book or see a movie and just move on like that, or just say “it’s just a song/movie/book”

Sometimes I have the effect of a movie stay with me for weeks after I’ve seen it; lingering, giving me goosebumps and sending my mind deep into thought.

When I was a kid, my siblings and I sat down one evening for a movie. We got to a thrilling part of the movie and we were all very tense. The hero had to cross a very damaged and crumbling bridge.

The whole family had been watching with fear and trembling when suddenly my dad said; “Relax, why are you all so bothered? They will cross just as the scriptwriter wrote it”.

He hadn’t been bothered at all, to him it was just a movie… And it’s like that for some people as well. Yeah. I’ve met them.

I have also met and know a few people who feel it just like I do and I love taking a moment to share these feelings with them.

Just when I was trying to round up this post, I got a message from my cousin Su’eddie.

He shared a song with me and how it made him very melancholic…I listened and I felt the exact same melancholy, especially at the last verse.

I love that I get to feel it. The music. The books. The movies.

Su’eddie’s song: Will the Circle be Unbroken

Sung by several singers including Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis and Shelby Lynne

My sad song: Tennessee Numbers

Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen

Shortly after I marveled at John Legend’s 24 track album, I found a 36 track album that left me thinking.

This one was by an amazing country singer and song writer. He was a contestant on the sixth season of the voice on Adam Levine’s team.

His third album titled One Thing At A Time is what I’m talking about… It is something

I think I’ll dwell on my top 5.

You Proof…amazing song… Honest with no bull crap.

Last Night… Really love this one. I’m not even sure why.

Devil Don’t Know… I try to imagine this one. Truely. Kind of funny, is it possible that the devil don’t know some kind of hell?… Yeah… Some things hurt so much, you got to wonder.

Tennessee Numbers… This makes me sad for whoever relates to it.

Thought You Should Know… This one just gets me thinking of my Su’eddie…everytime.

I’ll recommend the album to anyone. It is beautiful.

He’s a good singer… Morgan Wallen
