Son’s Day Off

I am pretty firm with my son when it comes to enforcing morals and values.

I dare say I’m hard on him…I think I’m acting from a place of fear. Fear that he may miss it somehow. I think I know where this fear emanates from… Actually I know but it’s kind of personal.

As the years passed and it began to look like he may be an only child, I just knew I couldn’t relent on the matter.

Last night I told him I was giving him a day off. 😂

A day without any chores. A day where I wouldn’t double check anything he does. A day with no screen time limit and no strick bed time.

You see, for the rest of the world, children are celebrated on the 20th of November and also 1st of June in some countries. Here in Nigeria, children are celebrated on the 27th of May.

So today, I didn’t insist on dining table breakfast, I actually served him breakfast in bed. I plan to take him out to lunch and then order take-out for dinner. These are the kind of things he loves.

He turns 10 in a few weeks…double digits… Yaaaaaaaaaaay. I think I might just give him another day off then.

… But come tomorrow, everything goes back to normal. 😁

So, while my son is having a fabulous day, I wish all children do have their kind of fabulous day too.

Happy Children’s Day.

  1. Wonderful idea to have a Children’s Day. You both get to celebrate. Stages of life for a child are a worrisome thing and as you say you’re sometimes “acting from a place of fear.” Yes, fear of what he might become. But also in trying to protect and instruct, actions are coming from “a place of love.” Balancing is difficult. “Don’t do dangerous things,” is a statement from a place of fear and love. I think the age of ten is a big challenge. I seem to remember that it was when I first thought of myself as an individual rather than just as a reacting child.

  2. Aww, I love this! Kids need a “day off” every once in a while! When our boys were little, I always knew it was that kind of need when our oldest was really acting out especially “bad” (this is the son who was highly active and strong willed, which lent to more restrictions). That sounds silly, but I actually learned this from my husband, and it happened first when he was about 5-6years old.
There was a week of just out of control stubbornness, hyper activity, and I thought I was going to explode because it seemed nothing I did worked to “reign him back in.” My husband said, “I think I’ll take him to Six Flags.” I looked at him like he’d just grown another head. My first thought was that would totally undermine everything I had tried to correct during that week! But my husband explained that he felt like our son was over stressed, and he just needed a release valve instead of more pressure in punishment and restrictions. I seriously doubted is reasoning, but being a submissive wife, I told him my disagreement but agreed to it and trusted him to lead. The next day, our son had total daddy-son time, and they played all day long. It was like a transformation happened! That whole next week, he was a changed little boy!! (Now, granted, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t back to his strong willed self soon. Haha.) … and I realized in that moment that my husband was a Godsend into my life! 😉 … seriously, I realized this, but we also realized that he was stressed with school, the attention “stealing” of his little brother who was needy right then, and some other things that we actually didn’t know were going on till much later.
So, give your little ones those days off, and I pray the Lord helps you to hear the cries of their little hearts when they’re in need of a little more than what we think they need… 😉
