The Pina Colada Song

I was in an e-group meeting one evening when being the only married person in the group, my friend Miche directed a question at me. She asked if it sometimes got boring being married to one person. I told her it was possible. Especially if both parties involved did not make any effort to make everyday fun and interesting for each other.

After the meeting I gave her a call and told her I had an answer for her question and it lay in The Pina Colada song, ‘Escape’ by Rupert Holmes.

In the song, while his wife lies asleep, a man sends out a response to a letter he sees in the personal columns of a newspaper. In the letter, a lady lists a few exciting interests and desires and she asks anyone who’s interests and desires match hers to please meet up with her and escape. His letter of response gets published in the newspaper as well, stating that he is very much like her and desires very much the same things that she does, he agrees that they should meet and escape.

He made an excuse for himself; he and his “old lady” had fallen into the same old dull routine. That was good enough I guess.

Well, arrangements were made and they met to escape, only, when they met, it turned out the first post was written by his very own ‘old lady’. Apparently she had been bored with the same ‘old dull routine’ and needed someone who wanted the excitement she craved and desired the same things she did. They had no idea that they wanted the same thing.

Bottom line is this; we are bound to get bored with whatever and in whatever we do if we do not make intentional effort and find ways to make if fun and exciting for ourselves.
