Ross Geller’s choice

If you could bring back one dinosaur, which one would it be?

I love period dramas and romcoms, I love country music, I love beans…

Not everyone likes or understands why I like these things…but I guess it’s different strokes…

I have never been fascinated about dinosaurs. I have never understood people’s fascination about them either.

I would never willingly pick out a dinosaur movie…but I know a number of people who would.

One of them is paleontologist Ross Geller, my second favourite character from the sitcom Friends.

If I could bring back one dinosaur, I would bring it back only because Ross wants it and I would let him pick which one he wants back… I learnt it’s the Mezesoic Mastodon.

60 minutes with Steven Furtick

Steven Furtick is an American pastor. He has been the pastor of Elevation Church for 17 Years . Even though I am thousands of kilometres away from North Carolina, I call his church Home. What draws me to him is his ability to admit that he is human and fallible.

If I had 60 minutes with Steven Furtick…

I’d spend 5 minutes saying hello, asking about his wife Holly and the kids… Elijah, Graham and Abby.

As soon as that was done with, I would take 5 minutes to ask him about how he was able to throw in pop culture references and still get me to see that it is by Jesus alone…

I would take 5 minutes to talk about Television and film. He’s got some amazing recommendations. He probably doesn’t know I or anyone noted them.

I would take another 5 to try to squeeze a conversation about music… I doubt it would do but I would manage.

Then… I would ask him to spend 20 mins with me on his favourite sermon ever… I would hope he’d say it was ‘Yes You’.

I’d take 5 minutes for a bit of that parenting series he refuses to do.

For 10 minutes, I would let him talk to me from his heart.

We would take 4 minutes to pray together…

And in the last minute I would ask if I could get another 60 minutes with him.

And if he said yes, I’d like John Malone, Msugh and Su’eddie to be with me…

We’d make it casual over tea and coffee.

Loved and blessed

I remember when I was totally driven by everything that happened around me.

One bad event could dictate my mood for weeks.

In 2019 I went for a sisters vacation with my siblings and one of the souvenirs I cherished was a mug with the inscription ‘loved’. For some reason, it comforted me through a bad experience that occurred just as I returned from the trip.

Earlier in the year, I shared how my friend Helen the Wonder woman had given me a mug with ‘blessed’ written on it. I loved it so much. I even cringed sometimes when my husband used it. I’m not much of a sharer.

These two mugs broke. Not on the same day…but

… What thrilled me with the breaking is how I cleaned up and said the words ‘I am still loved’ and ‘I’m blessed to have received this from Helen’.

I know me… A few years ago, I would have had a mood for days…feeling less loved or not so blessed.

I’m glad that I’m grown up enough… Not by age but in mindfulness….to know that I’m loved and blessed no matter what.

Easy like Saturday morning

It is very unusual of me to be up at 7am on a Saturday morning. I usually sleep in till 9am. Saturdays are the only days that I can enjoy that luxury.

On Monday to Friday I am usually out of the house before 7:30am…and even though Sunday mornings are presumably easy, it’s not as easy as my Saturdays.

Ever since flowers began to show up this year, I have found myself admiring a lot of the wild ones I usually see on my way out in the mornings. Wild flowers are one of the reasons I long for my Nigerian spring.

Last Monday I decided that I would take a walk on Saturday to pick a few…and that’s why I was up at 7am.

I woke my son up to join me for the walk… He didn’t think he would like it. So I went alone.

It was a beautiful walk. I found different kind. A few looked like crocuses. They were everywhere and in different colours.

When I was done picking, I walked back quickly to put a bouquet together. I loved the outcome.

I’m sitting in my living room, looking at my bouquet and enjoying a cup of coffee while I write.

Oh…my son thinks I should have made him go for that walk. We have a date for next Saturday.

The Out-Laws

I wasn’t going to say a thing. Nope. Nothing.

…but then, I had promised my Cousin Su that I would have something to say by the time I was done watching the movie.

One thing I like for sure is the play with the title. In-laws… Out-Laws.

The one thing I am sure I loved is the fact that Pierce Brosnan is still a hunk and may always be.

I’ve got to admit, it was entertaining…. And like my niece Su said, interesting…but I hate to say I didn’t get an intriguing/fascinating feeling.

I felt it was predictable… Right from the moment when we could tell that the Father In Law had been made during the robbery at the bank.

So, really, I’m still not saying much… All I’m saying is;

The Out-Laws is an interesting movie with a predictable script…all the characters are amazing but weird… Except the Bride.

Everything was beautifully twisted… Especially with the help of the cuffs and chains at the end.

What a Mess

“I can’t tell why you are so much in my heart”.

Stephen felt so sorry for Lina. She seemed irritated and frustrated at the same time.

You could tell she was sick and tired of trying to understand how he got into her heart and how she couldn’t get rid of him

He knew exactly what she meant by that. It was the same puzzle in his heart.

Why and how did one person steal your heart and your mind too… Leaving you with nothing to do about it?

The problem was, even if he knew what she meant, he didn’t feel the same way about her.

He knew what she meant because it was the same way he felt about Tatyana. Sad part was, Tatyana didn’t feel the same way he felt for her.

He yearned for Tatyana… Just the way Lina yearned for him.

The heart is just a fool…and it drags the mind with it.

Just Feel it.

I listened to a song and I got sad. Very sad.

My friend Jessica couldn’t understand why it got to me that way.

“It’s just a song” She said.

No, it’s not just a song. It’s someone’s thoughts in words about how they feel but with instruments, making music. Music for you… The listener.

That’s the purpose… for you to feel what the composer/singer wants you to feel…and if you can, relate to it.

I feel it’s a waste of the creator’s efforts if we can listen to a song, read a book or see a movie and just move on like that, or just say “it’s just a song/movie/book”

Sometimes I have the effect of a movie stay with me for weeks after I’ve seen it; lingering, giving me goosebumps and sending my mind deep into thought.

When I was a kid, my siblings and I sat down one evening for a movie. We got to a thrilling part of the movie and we were all very tense. The hero had to cross a very damaged and crumbling bridge.

The whole family had been watching with fear and trembling when suddenly my dad said; “Relax, why are you all so bothered? They will cross just as the scriptwriter wrote it”.

He hadn’t been bothered at all, to him it was just a movie… And it’s like that for some people as well. Yeah. I’ve met them.

I have also met and know a few people who feel it just like I do and I love taking a moment to share these feelings with them.

Just when I was trying to round up this post, I got a message from my cousin Su’eddie.

He shared a song with me and how it made him very melancholic…I listened and I felt the exact same melancholy, especially at the last verse.

I love that I get to feel it. The music. The books. The movies.

Su’eddie’s song: Will the Circle be Unbroken

Sung by several singers including Kenny Rogers, Randy Travis and Shelby Lynne

My sad song: Tennessee Numbers

And He Wasn’t Even Real

Who was your first Crush?

Jeff Colby

I couldn’t have been more than 10 years old.

We would gather to watch. Episode after episode.

We got them from the local video rental shop.

I think we may have had a schedule because Uncle Peter, Uncle Yashi and Aunty Angie were always present on the days we watched.

Maybe it was Tuesday and Thursday evenings… And weekends too. I think that’s what I remember.

It was so long ago…

Everyone had a favourite. For Mummy and Aunty Angie it was Alexis.

Daddy loved Blake. Sometimes I think he wished he was Blake.

We watched every single episode… Dynasty 1981… 9 seasons.

I watched and waited… Just to see Jeff. Always.

To me, he was the ideal man. I was going to find myself a man exactly like him when I grew up…

It didn’t matter that he wasn’t real.

As I grew up and became a teenager, he was replaced… Of course… By real humans.

…but when the question comes up, the answer is always Jeff Colby.

Jeff Colby is a character played by John James (now 67 years old) in Dynasty and The Colbys.

Country

That’s very much all it is.

What is your favorite genre of music?

It makes my heart smile.

Even when I am down… It finds a way to pick me up.

With most of them… The drawl and rich baritone does me in.

The touch of every guitar string.

The relatable lyrics in almost every song.

The simple things that you begin to value as you listen.

It’s all so whole and real.

I love Country music

Whew

Gasping for air.

Almost Drowning.

Reaching for something, anything to hold on to.

It’s so deep.

My feet can’t touch the ground… Plus, I can’t seem to know how to swim in here.

I need to get out.

I should soak in a hot tub and not a pool…

The pool will be the death of me.
